Abstract

Recently, with the development of digital technology, virtual reality has had a great impact on human life. In particular, virtual reality has had a great impact on people’s self-recognition process. When we experience virtual worlds, interest in who I am and how my identity is formed is also increasing. Our aim is to clarify the process of individual identity formation in the virtual world through Lacan’s psychoanalytic theory. To this end, we studied the representative movie Matrix, which is a virtual reality theme. As a result of analyzing the self-recognition process through the main character Neo in The Matrix, we found that the virtual world is not only an extension of the real world, but also an important area for individuals to build and understand self-recognition. This shows that Lacan’s mirror stage theory works effectively in virtual environments. We expect to provide a new perspective on understanding the self-recognition process in the virtual world and provide a theoretical basis for exploring individual identity construction and self-recognition in the digital age.
